MKA to MP3

The MKA format (Matroska Audio) is the pure audio version of the well-known MKV video format. As an open container format, MKA can contain various audio codecs, including lossless formats such as FLAC or DTS. Outside the PC world, however, MKA is hardly supported. Conversion to MP3 ensures universal compatibility on almost all devices and players.

Matroska: an open container format for audio, video and subtitles

The Matroska project was launched in 2002 as an open alternative to proprietary formats such as ASF (Microsoft) or QuickTime (Apple). The name is a reference to the Russian matryoshka doll: a large doll that contains many smaller dolls inside it. The idea behind it: a single format that can accommodate many audio, video and subtitle tracks without being tied to specific codecs.
While MKV has established itself as a video container format, especially in the home cinema and media centre scene, MKA, as a pure audio variant of the format, still leads a niche existence. MKA files are used, among other things, when the audio track is extracted from an MKV video or when lossless formats such as FLAC are to be used together with chapter markers (audio books) and metadata.

Convert MKA to MP3

MKA is a container, MP3 is a codec. It may be that the MKA file itself already contains the sound in MP3. In this case, the file is not converted at all, only the container is changed. If another codec is used in the MKA file, such as FLAC, Vorbis, OPUS, AAC or DTS, the codec is automatically recoded during conversion.

Important: If the MKA file contains lossless audio (e.g. FLAC), the conversion will result in a loss of quality. For most applications, such as listening to music or podcasts on the go or archiving voice recordings, this difference is acceptable. If lossless conversion is desired, you can also select FLAC or OPUS as the target formats.
